Ronald's obituary
Ronald Albert Lalonde
February 6, 1939 – August 14, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ronald Albert Lalonde, at the age of 85, on August 14, 2024, at The Glebe Long Term Care in Ottawa, ON. Born in Sudbury, Ronald was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose kindness and craftsmanship left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Ronald was the cherished son of the late Eddy E. Lalonde and Simone Lalonde (née St-Amour) and was one of seven brothers. He is predeceased by his brothers Robert, Laurent, Claude, Marcel, and Michel, and is survived by his brother Richard.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Patricia Lalonde (née Lanthier), with whom he shared 60 years of marriage, having wed on March 30, 1964. Together, they raised a close-knit family, creating a life rich in love, hard work, and faith.
Ronald is lovingly remembered by his children: Marie Christine Lalonde (and her partner Thomas Dann), Jean Marc Lalonde, and Jean-Paul Lalonde (and his wife Nicole Lalonde). He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Jaime and Tascha Douglas, Jacob and Valen Lalonde, and Jean-Sébastien, Ariane, Solange, and Camille Lalonde.
A master carpenter by trade, Ronald was a respected member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 2486. His expertise was particularly evident in projects like the INCO cooling towers, where his fearlessness at great heights earned him high regard. Even from a young age, Ronald's climbing abilities were extraordinary—his mother famously had to call the firefighters when, as a four-year-old, he scaled the roof of their home. In addition to his professional work, Ronald was skilled in home renovation and DIY projects, ensuring that every house he worked on became a comfortable and welcoming home for his family. His career was marked by exceptional craftsmanship, integrity, and leadership, qualities that earned him numerous accolades and the deep respect of his colleagues and community.
In his free time, Ronald was passionate about farming, gardening, fishing, painting, and spending time at his cherished camp. He raised his family primarily on the Wabagishik and McKerrow properties, where he instilled in them the values of hard work, respect for nature, and the importance of family. Known for his quiet demeanor, wonderful sense of humor, and deep love for children, Ronald approached life with a “live and let live” attitude, always guided by integrity and kindness.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Ronald’s life on Saturday, August 24th at 11:00 AM at St. Gabriel, Eglise Catholique Romaine, located at 55 Appleford St, Gloucester, ON. For more information, please contact the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Ronald's memory to causes close to his heart:
- Le Comité Provincial de la Ligue des cadets de l’Air du Canada (Québec et Vallée de l’Outaouais): A program that greatly benefited many of Ronald’s children and grandchildren, and one he deeply valued.
- Canadian Wildlife Federation: Reflecting Ronald's love for fishing and the outdoors, this organization supports the conservation of Canada's wildlife and natural habitats.
- Habitat for Humanity: As a skilled carpenter, Ronald would have valued helping families build safe, decent, and affordable homes.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to The Glebe Centre for the compassionate care Ronald received over the past six years.
Ronald’s legacy of hard work, devotion to his family, and quiet strength will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
